Opening Statement and Introduction
Come one, come all to the Third Annual Philadelphia Area Astronomers Meeting (PAAM3)!
This informal meeting will be held Saturday, October 26, 2002, at Villanova University.
The meeting will provide participants with short talks on all aspects of astronomical research occuring in our area. But know this - The overriding objective is to provide Astronomers from the many area campuses the opportunity to better know each other, and to learn who among us is doing what!
Everybody is strongly encouraged to speak. Titles such as "My Current Astronomical Interests" or "What I'm Up To Right Now" are excellent (and even encouraged). Talks can be up to about 10 minutes long, but there's no lower limit on their length. Faculty, postdocs, and students (both graduate and undergraduate) are all strongly encouraged to attend and participate.
Registration
Cost: Free, repeat Free!
Registration Includes: Continental type breakfast, coffee, juices, lunch, and refreshments - all will be provided free of charge!
However:
In order to get an accurate count of participants so that all will be fed, it is imperative that you send an email to Larry DeWarf so that we know that you're coming.
Please indicate a title for your short presentation.

Attractions for the Whole Family
The Villanova campus and the surrounding areas offer much to see and do:
The beautiful St. Thomas of Villanova Chapel, with its distinctive double spires, can be found on the main campus along with a myriad of structures of various architectural designs. Alumni Hall is the oldest structure on campus (circa 1840) that is still a daily part of student life, and recent additions and renovations to the Bartley Hall (Commerce and Finance) and the Mendel Science Center bracket Villanova's more than 150 year history.
Villanova's main campus is a Registered Arboretum, with many interesting species of florae and faunae about. Take a walk around, some of the more interesting and unique trees are labelled. You are on your own when it comes to identifying the wildlife, especially since school is in session!
Nearby is historic Valley Forge Park. It was here that General George Washington forged his Continental Army into a fighting force, during the difficult winter encampment of 1777-78.
Of course, the gang can always trek out to the King of Prussia Mall, technically the largest mall in the country, for a long and productive day of Shopping!
And what better way to top-off a day of Astronomical Socializing than a sampling of the Mainline restaraunts. With too many choices to list here, all palettes and preferences are sure to be satiated!
Directions to Villanova
Whether you choose Planes, Trains, or Automobiles, the trip out to Villanova is quite simple and direct.
Directions to the Main Campus can be found here
The meeting will be held in the Mendel Science Center. The room number is 102, which can be found on the West side of the building on the ground level.
If you are driving, the best place to park would be the "Spring Mill" lot. Turn north on Rt. 320 (Spring Mill Rd.) from Rt. 30 (Lancaster Ave.) and travel approximately 0.4 miles. Turn right immediately after crossing over the R-5 train tracks and proceed straight into the parking lot. You will want to park back towards the train station to be closest to the Mendel Science Center. Be sure that you DO NOT park in the separate SEPTA lot - they will tow your vehicle!
If you take SEPTA's R-5 train, the "Villanova" stop is directly north of the Mendel Science Center. If you are coming from the Philadelphia direction, simply walk through the tunnel under the tracks and the proper building will be in front of you.
A Map of the Campus:
Past PAAMs
The first two PAAM meetings were phenomenal successes!
The genesis meeting, PAAM1, was held on the University of Pennsylvania campus in the year 2000. Click here to see a photo of some of the participants.
PAAM2 was held the following year on the Drexel campus. Please visit Michael Vogeley's PAAM2 webpage to see a description of the action.
Come help make PAAM3 another meeting to be remembered!
